En la Europa del Sur, como en el resto de los territorios de la Europa occidental, la construcción del Estado y la Nación que siguió al derrumbe de los regímenes preliberales estuvo impregnado de fuertes tensiones ideológicas, sociales y territoriales. España e Italia, aunque con trayectorias distintas, abordaron a lo largo del siglo XIX su conformación como estados-naciones: España, a partir, de la descomposición de la Monarquía Católica, Italia desde el complejo proceso de unificación que significó el Risorgimento.
