Large populations of interacting active elements, periodic or chaotic, can undergo spontaneous transitions to dynamically ordered states. These collective states are characterized by self-organized coherence revealed by full mutual synchronization of individual dynamics or the formation of multiple synchronous clusters. Such self-organization phenomena are essential for the functioning of complex systems of various origins, both natural and artificial. This book provides a detailed introduction to the theory of collective synchronization phenomena in large complex systems. Transitions to dynamical clustering and synchronized states are systematically discussed. Such concepts as dynamical order parameters, glass like behavior and hierarchical organization are presented.
This book is a printed edition of the Special Issue "Plant Mitochondria" that was published in IJMS
This volume investigates competing ideas, images, and stereotypes of a European ‘East’, exploring its role in defining European and national conceptions of self and other since the eighteenth century. Through a set of original case studies, this collection explores the intersection between discourses about a more distant, exotic, or colonial ‘Orient’ with a more immediate ‘East’. The book considers this shifting, imaginary border from different points of view and demonstrates that the location, definition, and character of the ‘East’, often associated with socio-economic backwardness and other unfavourable attributes, depended on historical circumstances, political preferences, cultural assumptions, and geography. Spanning two centuries, this study analyses the ways that changing ideals and persistent clichéd attitudes have shaped the conversation about and interpretations of Eastern Europe. Europe and the East will be essential reading for anyone interested in images and ideas of Europe, European identity, and conceptions of the ‘East’ in intellectual and cultural history.
Migration is often viewed as a one-way process, from the country of origin to the place of arrival, but recent academic research shows that this presumption is fundamentally flawed. Migration has always been characterized by return movements, as a glance into history reveals - from transatlantic returns in the 19th century to the back-and-forth of migrant workers and refugees in the 20th century, and numerous other forced and voluntary migrations. This volume invites to reconceptualize studies in migration history by shifting away from the focus on "going away" to a more complex one revolving around a plurality of issues of leaving, returning, moving on and traveling again, belonging and fluid identities in "third spaces". Structured in three parts, the contributions in this volume shed light on the close connection between power dynamics and return migration as well as how migration processes shape individual planning abilities, social relationships, and complex spatial dynamics. The methodological part of the volume further encourages readers to reflect on growing data collections and possibilities for digital research on return migration.
This book describes the fusion of CBCT and CAD/CAM technologies for the purpose of surgical dental treatments and explains the advantages and applications of this digital approach for implant placement procedures and other oral surgical protocols. All aspects of computer-aided imaging and design are first covered in the textbook, including the creation of DICOM and STL files; followed by the process of virtual merging to obtain a combined image. Secondly, clinical tips for the use of digital wax up, software interactions and accurate template fabrication are explained, including subtractive and additive methods used for this manufacturing step. The remainder of the book is devoted to the app...
