An Outline of the Origins of Money
A new English translation of a forgotten German text that influenced cultural understanding of money in the early twentieth century. Heinrich Schurtz's 1898 book has been a touchstone for economic historians, anthropologists, and philosophers interested in the nature and origins of money in various societies, including Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Marcel Mauss, and Karl Polanyi. In his brief book, Schurtz experimented with concepts about money, going beyond traditional economic paradigms. Drawing on an extensive range of archaeological and ethnographic sources, he reframed a theory of money to include its materiality, symbolic nature, relationship to forms of property, and its dual origin in "outside money" and "inside money." While it is not well known today, it was important to the theorization of money in the first half of the 20th century and its innovative synthesis offers galvanizing questions and insights into how value relations are formed and how currency systems are interrelated. Consideration of Abiotic Natural Resources in Life Cycle Assessments
The book contains a collection of articles dealing with how the extraction of mineral resources can be considered in environmental analyses such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The consumption of resources, e.g., metals, is increasing strongly worldwide. This is associated with more energy use; environmental pollution; and social, economic, and political consequences. An increase is also expected for the coming decades. At the same time, modern products and technologies, even in the field of renewable energies, require a large number of critical raw materials. A crucial question here is the exhaustibility of natural resources. What is the relevance of resource depletion today? Must a geological shortage of metals be expected in the foreseeable future? How could such a thing be considered in the LCA of products and weighed against other environmental aspects? The articles in question have been written over the past three years by leading experts in both geology and environmental sciences and show the breadth of the controversial discussion.

»Durchaus rhapsodisch« – so beginnt eine Fragment gebliebene Sonate für Cello allein des jungen Theodor Wiesengrund; eine Vortragsanweisung, die ebenso auch das Formprinzip des später unter dem Namen Adorno weithin bekannt gewordenen Philosophen umreißen könnte. In diesem Band geht es um den eher fremd gebliebenen Musiker und Komponisten. Von Adornos zunächst künstlerischen Ambitionen ausgehend beleuchtet der Band eine wesentliche Dimension von Adornos musikalischem Denken, indem er sein kompositorisches Schaffen in den Blick rückt: die Liederzyklen und die Werke für Streicher, die Klavierstücke und Orchesterwerke. Hierbei stellt der Band ebenso die enge Verknüpfung von Theorie und Praxis in Adornos Denken heraus wie den künstlerischen Eigensinn seiner Musik, die nicht Exempel seiner Philosophie ist. Echo im Sprachwald
In den Kultur- und Geisteswissenschaften hat sich die Sicht auf Walter Benjamin als einem Denker der Visualität etabliert. Nicht nur gelten seine Texte zu Film und Fotografie als Vorläufer der Medientheorie. Vor allem Benjamins Methode, in Bildern zu denken, ist oftmals als ein Primat der optischen Erfahrung in seinem Denken gedeutet worden. Was jedoch geschieht, wenn man diese Hauptwege der Rezeption verlässt und den Spuren der weitaus weniger beachteten Klänge und Geräusche in Benjamins Texten nachforscht? Was zeichnet sich ab, wenn akustische Denkfiguren ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit rücken? Diesem Lektüreversuch ist die vorliegende Studie gewidmet. Im Mittelpunkt stehen auch hier Überlegungen zum dialektischen Bild, das allerdings weniger visuell gefasst wird, vielmehr variierende Bedeutung im Sinne von Sprach- und Klangbildern annimmt. Als zentrales Motiv erweist sich dabei das Echo: In dieser literarischen Denkfigur verschränkt sich Sprachphilosophie mit Reflexionen über verstellte Erfahrungsmöglichkeiten und Geschichtsbetrachtungen.
