Roots of Empire
Roots of Empire is the first monograph to connect forest management and state-building in the early modern Spanish global monarchy. The Spanish crown's control over valuable sources of shipbuilding timber in Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines was critical for developing and sustaining its maritime empire. This book examines Spain's forest management policies from the sixteenth century through the middle of the eighteenth century, connecting the global imperial level with local lived experiences in forest communities impacted by this manifestation of expanded state power. As home to the early modern world's most extensive forestry bureaucracy, Spain met serious political, technological, and financial limitations while still managing to address most of its timber needs without upending the social balance.

Este libro aborda el análisis de la ciudad en la Edad Moderna desde una perspectiva interdisciplinar, estudiando la interacción entre las instituciones de la Monarquía, la Iglesia, los órganos de gobierno urbano y los grupos urbanos. Aquí estuvo la sustancia de la ciudad en el Antiguo Régimen, un espacio único de colaboración, intercambio, tensión y conflicto. En este marco actuó la Monarquía forzada por sus propias necesidades financieras y políticas, consiguiendo un peso notable en la regulación de distintos aspectos de la vida urbana. No obstante, las ciudades continuaron teniendo una importante capacidad de negociación y actuación. En los trabajos que articulan el libro se estudia el dinamismo del gobierno urbano, las nuevas formas de sociabilidad, de creación cultural y la vida económica.

PRÓLOGO La obra que el lector tiene en sus manos constituye un magnífico exponente de lo que debe ser un libro de Historia. Conocí a su autor a finales de los años ochenta del siglo pasado, cuando ya mostraba una serie de cualidades que acabarían cristalizando en un brillante investigador. Desde un principio, José Luis mostró un gran interés por la historia social del derecho y de las instituciones, algo que –dicho sea de paso- no solía ser muy frecuente entre quienes cursaban la carrera de Historia; tras una brillante tesis de licenciatura de más de 300 páginas, esto es, las que hoy en día tiene una tesis doctoral, me propuso arrostrar un desafío mayor, estudiar las características y singladura de la institución real que atendía a los asuntos de justicia, gobierno y policía en la corte de Madrid, cuyo edificio, también conocido como Cárcel de Corte, alberga hoy en día la sede del ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores: el palacio de Santa Cruz.
