Roots of Empire
Roots of Empire is the first monograph to connect forest management and state-building in the early modern Spanish global monarchy. The Spanish crown's control over valuable sources of shipbuilding timber in Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines was critical for developing and sustaining its maritime empire. This book examines Spain's forest management policies from the sixteenth century through the middle of the eighteenth century, connecting the global imperial level with local lived experiences in forest communities impacted by this manifestation of expanded state power. As home to the early modern world's most extensive forestry bureaucracy, Spain met serious political, technological, and financial limitations while still managing to address most of its timber needs without upending the social balance.

Las reformas sanitarias borbónicas formaban parte de un proyecto que buscaba civilizar a los vasallos, convertirlos en sujetos sanos, obedientes y productivos, con base en ciertas prácticas ligadas al canon definido por los valores ilustrados. En la Nueva Granada, las reformas sanitarias comprendieron la organización y el saneamiento del espacio urbano, el desplazamiento de los cementerios fuera de las ciudades, el establecimiento de mecanismos más eficaces para luchar contra las epidemias, la reestructuración de la institución hospitalaria, la renovación de los estudios médicos y la puesta en circulación más intensa de libros relacionados con la salud. Este libro estudia los dos primeros aspectos. El texto explica las más importantes estrategias instauradas en la Nueva Granada, con el fin de llevar a caboestas reformas, los objetivos alcanzados, el conjunto de resistencias que generaron y la variada literatura que produjeron. Para ello, se revisitarán, desde otra perspectiva, varios de los temas privilegiados por la historia urbana neogranadina en los últimos años.
