Book of Abstracts for Między tekstem a kulturą z zagadnień przekładoznawstwa, the first volume of Beyond Language (BL1). Między tekstem a kulturą opens the door to translation theory in the Polish perspective, its practice and applications in history and modern times, inviting discussion from the most eminent Polish scholars across the disciplines. Arranged in four major parts (1. Translation theory in historical perspective; 2. Religion in translation – historical and modern perspectives; 3. From theory to practice; 4. Applications), the material will be of interest to both academics researching translation as a discipline and translators practicing the craft.
The fusion of technologies blurring distinctions between the physical, digital, and biological worlds has become a significant hallmark of the fourth industrial revolution. One answer to shaping the future in the age of the digital revolution is the concept of Society 5.0.; a super-smart society aims to create an efficient reality, regardless of region, age, gender, language, or other factors. The contributors ask about the place for human beings (exclusion or inclusion) and the communication of natural languages in a reality dominated by big data, artificial intelligence, and robotics. They intend to look at selected problems like humanities vs. technology, new perspectives in education and communication, digital and technological revolution. DARWIN’S THEORY OF EVOLUTION ranks among the most influential of modern scientific theories. Applying the methodology of COGNITIVE SEMANTICS , this study investigates how metaphors based on domains of JOURNEY, STRUGGLE, TREE and HUMAN AGENCY serve to conceptualize key concepts of Darwin’s theory — such as evolutionary change, natural selection, and relationships among organisms. At the outset the author identifies original metaphors in The Origin of Species, to turn to their realizations in modern discourse on evolution in later chapters. Thus, the study uncovers how metaphors contribute to structuring the theory by expressing it in a coherent and attractive way, and how they provide mental tools for reasoning. As the first comprehensive study of conceptual metaphors that underlie Darwin’s theory and affect the way we talk and think about evolution, it may be of interest not only to linguists and evolutionary biologists but also to anyone interested in the interconnection between thought and language.

Changes in the clinical picture of speech may sometimes become evident before full manifestation of an underlying neurodegenerative condition, therefore contributing to an earlier neurological diagnosis. The author proposes a new SPEECH ASSESSMENT METHOD (SAM), grounded in her clinical experience with dysarthria, awareness of diagnostically important features, and the practical need to confine logopedic examination to tasks diagnostically most important and maximally tolerable by the patient. When diligently applied, the new SAM allows the clinician to identify overlapping dysarthric symptoms in greater detail and, when repeated, analyze their dynamics over time. This particular volume will be of interest to diagnosticians, clinical speech pathologists, linguists, and all those who study (1) how damage to the nervous system influences the entire speech mechanism of adults, thus impairing their oral communication, and — more importantly — (2) how acute awareness of speech changes may help pinpoint the specific type of speech disorder and contribute to an earlier diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease or help resolve medical doubts.

Jamaican Creole, like many other contact languages, has taken its ultimate shape through the course of multi-lingual and multi-cultural influences. From the perspective of contact linguistics , this meticulous study examines Jamaican Creole proverbs in a corpus of over 1090 recorded sayings; it presents a framework of cultural changes in Jamaica accompanied by corresponding linguistic changes in its creole.
