« Women's networks proliferated during the long nineteenth century in the Atlantic World and began spreading globally. Abetted by transformative changes in communication and transportation (the subject of the first chapter), women established links among themselves, sometimes informally, sometimes as part of formal organizations. Most goal-oriented networks, particularly those with social and political agendas, were personal, national or transnational in nature and inevitably excluded those who did not share the goal. Such activist networks and their influences are the main focus of Part One. Topics addressed include women's national and international networks in British temperance associat...

First presented at the conference 'Intercontinental Cross-Currents: Women's (Net-)Works across Europe and the Americas (1789-1939)' in Wittenberg, Germany, in December 2013, the papers assembled in this volume trace nineteenth-century women's networks inside and outside historical movements and literary texts, in diverse genres, at various historical moments, and from different vantage points. Considered together, the contributions attest to the potential of a woman-centered approach to transatlantic historiographical, cultural, and literary studies. Very much like the people, texts, and objects they examine, they are transatlantic in scope and perspective. Truly inspired by the idea and concept of the Atlantic Crosscurrents, these essays confirm and emphasize interdisciplinarity and methodological variety in (trans-)Atlantic studies.
This book is a complete reworking and update of Marga Cottino-Jones' popular A Student's Guide to Italian Film (1983, 1993) . This guide retains earlier editions' interest in renowned films and directors but is also attentive to the popular films which achieved box office success among the public.
"A book of Hamish Fulton's text pieces that both discuss and exemplify his artwork. Fulton's spare texts originate in walks he takes through the landscape. Descriptive and at times prescriptive, he describes them as "facts for the walker and fiction for everyone else." Carefully placed on the small square pages, each aphoristic piece is simultaneously present and absent as an artwork, a fact captured by the book's subtitle: 'The separation of subject (walking) and medium (text on paper).'"--Printed Matter.
The societies of the twenty-first century are subject to social, cultural, political, and economic changes. In this context, the school is asked to educate the future citizens in the present. To respond to this kaleidoscopic reality, the school is immersed in a pedagogical revolution. In this book, the reader will find a selection of avant-garde research works from different disciplines and contexts, which have their epicenter in the school and in the faculties of education. New issues in pedagogy and education, and new roles of teachers and students, are discussed in a global and diverse context. And new methodological and formative proposals are also proposed to build the ideal school and the ideal teacher, from the initial and continuous teacher training.
"This is the colorful and dramatic biography of two of America's most controversial entrepreneurs: Moses Louis Annenberg, 'the racing wire king, ' who built his fortune in racketeering, invested it in publishing, and lost much of it in the biggest tax evasion case in United States history; and his son, Walter, launcher of TV Guide and Seventeen magazines and former ambassador to Great Britain."--Jacket.
State Capitalism under Neoliberalism analyzes State capitalism in agri-food under neoliberalism and investigates State-sponsored actions designed to counter the negative consequences of the implementation of free-market policies and strategies. In particular, it probes efforts of the Brazilian State to respond to the neoliberalization and corporatization of agriculture and food. Between 2003 and 2016, the left leaning Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores) governed Brazil, which claimed to support landless peasants, family farming, food sovereignty, and State regulation of the unwanted consequences of the evolution of free market capitalism. The contributors analyze these actions of the Brazilian State, stressing its accomplishments and limits, and argue that the emancipatory actions of the Brazilian State engendered a complex and contradictory set of results which show that State capitalism is a problematic solution to the problems generated by the global neoliberal regime.
