The Biology and Culture of Tilapias
This conference brought together 19 tilapia biologists and experimental culturists from 10 countries. It was designed from the outset as a technical conference on the basic biology of the tilapias and applications in culture systems. The conference did not consider the commercial aspects of tilapia culture.
The Biology of Island Floras
Oceanic islands offer biologists unparalleled opportunities to study evolutionary processes and ecological phenomena. However, human activity threatens to alter or destroy many of these fragile ecosystems, with recent estimates suggesting that nearly half of the world's insular endemics are threatened with extinction. Bringing together researchers from around the world, this book illustrates how modern research methods and new concepts have challenged accepted theories and changed our understanding of island flora. Particular attention is given to the impact of molecular studies and the insights that they provide into topics such as colonisation, radiation, diversification and hybridisation. Examples are drawn from around the world, including the Hawaiian archipelago, Galapagos Islands, Madagascar and the Macronesian region. Conservation issues are also highlighted, with coverage of alien species and the role of ex situ conservation providing valuable information that will aid the formulation of management strategies and genetic rescue programmes.
Tirocínio Policial
Este livro estabelece um modelo teórico das formas como são tomadas as decisões de um policial em situação de perigo. Em matéria de Criminologia, apresentamos o processo de seleção de escolha, o chamado “tirocínio policial”, desde o momento da percepção do perigo, análise e avaliação do risco até a ação ou omissão propriamente dita. Através de dados estatísticos, estudos empíricos e sociológicos, demonstramos que os policiais não são truculentos ao ponto de ser comparados à “soldados espartanos” e/ou “Robocops”, conforme costumeiramente é noticiado pela mídia brasileira. Acima de tudo, são seres humanos dotados de falhas e sentimentos. Daí o indispensável rigor de entender como os policiais agem ou devem agir em situação de perigo. Desta forma, propiciamos ao leitor uma visão global sobre a experiência de vida desses profissionais, que para muitos, são a última esperança de Justiça e resgate da dignidade da pessoa humana.

About Trees considers our relationship with language, landscape, perception, and memory in the Anthropocene. The book includes texts and artwork by a stellar line up of contributors including Jorge Luis Borges, Andrea Bowers, Ursula K. Le Guin, Ada Lovelace and dozens of others. Holten was artist in residence at Buro BDP. While working on the book she created an alphabet and used it to make a new typeface called Trees. She also made a series of limited edition offset prints based on her Tree Drawings.
