Going to University from Care

Going to University from Care

At present only one child in a hundred goes to university from care. The findings of the research reported here suggest that, given the chance, far more of these young people have the potential to benefit from higher education. Local authorities, schools and universities should work together to raise aspirations and provide the financial, practical and emotional support that is needed. Going to University from Care is the final report of the five-year 'By Degrees' study, which followed three successive groups of young people entering higher education from a background in local authority care. The research was commissioned by the Frank Buttle Trust, which has a long history of providing grant aid to children in adversity and those lacking family support, and particularly of promoting their education, including supporting students and trainees in further and higher education. 'By Degrees' is designed to influence policy and practice at national and local levels.

Health, Experienced Support and School Performance among Children in Out-of-home care

Children in out-of-home care (OHC) have higher risks for developing poorer health and school achievement, being subjected to more abuse experiences, as well as negative long-term outcomes related to occupational performance, socioeconomic status, addiction, and criminality. Research related to OHC children is fragmented and the effects of interventions are under-studied. This thesis aimed to explore health, abuse, support, and preconditions for school among children in OHC and to assess changes after an intervention targeting foster children’s school performance. Paper I compared OHC pupils in last year high school to non-OHC peers in a national survey with 5 839 pupils. The study showed t...

Leaving Care

How can social workers and agencies best support young people as they make the transition from care to independent living? This authoritative study investigates the successes and failures of care services for young people, identifying factors that hinder effective transition from care and the types of support that help to promote positive life choices. Analysing current policy and drawing on the findings of past research, the authors explore the experiences of young people leaving the care of three very different Scottish local authorities to demonstrate how support works in practice. They address the impact of throughcare and aftercare services, and argue for a more gradual transition towards independence, combined with more consistent and ongoing support after young people leave care. This book draws on the Scottish context to offer valuable lessons that are important reading for all students and practitioners in the fields of social care and social policy, and other professionals interested in the development of childcare practice.
